Ash Barty has crashed out in the first round of the Tokyo Olympics women's singles tournament, going down in straight sets to Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Fresh off her Wimbledon success a fortnight ago, it was expected to be a comfortable start against the world No.48 - but it was not to be.

Sorribes Tormo broke Barty twice in her first three service games en route to clinching the first set 6-4, and the world No.1 was unable to stem the bleeding, with uncharacteristic errors costing her at crucial times as she let the second set slip from 3-3, losing the final three games to bomb out of the tournament.

The match can be summed up by one simple statistic; Sorribes Tormo won the second set without a single forehand or backhand winner.

The Spaniard won 33 total points in the set, with Barty credited with six forced and 27 unforced errors.

Across the match, the world No.1 had a staggering 55 unforced errors, and landed just over half her first serves in play.

After Sam Stosur was bundled out on the opening day of play, Ajla Tomljanovic remains the only Australian woman in the singles draw, and plays Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova later today.

Barty and Storm Sanders remain in the doubles competition and will be in second-round action tomorrow.
