Origin star Dane Gagai has reportedly told teammates he is off to Newcastle next season, with a three-year deal expected to be formalised imminently in a huge blow to the Broncos, who were also keen on the gun centre.

Gagai was tossing up a return to Brisbane on a lucrative contract and was also offered a one-year extension to stay at South Sydney.

Gagai and his former club the Knights had positive talks after some doubts over the star's asking price but have come to an agreement.

Gagai made his NRL debut for the Broncos in 2011 before being released from the club 12 months later for disciplinary reasons. He then joined Newcastle, playing 128 games for the Knights before signing with Souths in 2018.

During his six years in Newcastle, Gagai established himself in the Origin arena for the Maroons and the club hopes his return will give the club much needed experience and strike in the outside backs.
