New Delhi: Polling for by-elections is ongoing in two states. Voting continues from 7 AM to 6 PM across 247 polling booths. Voters in the Milkipur constituency of Uttar Pradesh and the Erode (East) constituency of Tamil Nadu are exercising their right to vote. The by-election in Milkipur, Uttar Pradesh, became necessary after the resignation of Samajwadi Party MP, Awadhesh Prasad. Awadhesh Prasad had won as an MLA from the SC reserved seat of Milkipur in the previous elections.
However, in the subsequent parliamentary elections, he contested from the Faizabad seat and won. As a result, he resigned from his MLA position, making the by-election on Wednesday inevitable. There are 370,829 voters in the constituency. Although 10 candidates are contesting, the main competition is between the ruling BJP and the Samajwadi Party.
In Tamil Nadu, the by-election in Erode is being held following the death of Congress leader E.V.K.S. Elangovan. V.C. Chandrakumar is contesting on behalf of the DMK, with challenges posed by AIADMK and BJP. A total of 46 candidates are in the fray. There are 228,000 voters in the constituency. The results of the by-election, along with Delhi Assembly elections, will be declared on the 8th of this month.
The nomination process for the elections began on the 10th of this month, but major parties such as AIADMK and BJP have boycotted the election. V.C. Chandrakumar is supported by Minister Muthusamy and leaders of alliance parties, who campaigned door-to-door in support of him.
