President Donald Trump on Saturday (March 15, 2025) ordered a series of airstrikes on the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. He promised to use “overwhelming lethal force” unless the Iran-backed Houthi rebels stop their attacks on shipping along a vital sea corridor. Nine people were killed in the attacks that came after US President Donald Trump announced a strike on the Iran-backed group. The Houthis vowed to respond to the deadly attacks. "This aggression will not go without a response, and our Yemeni armed forces are fully prepared to withstand the escalating onslaught," the rebels' political bureau said in a statement. Earlier, Trump said in a social media post, "Our brave warfighters are currently conducting airstrikes on terrorist targets, leaders, and missile defenses to protect American shipping, air and naval assets, and restore navigational freedom." "No terrorist force will be able to prevent American commercial and naval vessels from sailing freely on the world's waterways." For further coverage, check Vaartha’s e-paper.

US President Donald Trump also warned Iran to stop supporting the rebel group, vowing to hold the country "fully accountable" for the actions of its proxies. The Houthis reported several explosions in their territory on Saturday evening. Pictures circulating online showed plumes of black smoke over the area of the Sanaa airport complex, which includes a huge military facility. The extent of the damage is not yet clear.

It comes days after the Houthis said they would resume attacks on Israeli ships sailing in Yemen's coastal waters in response to Israel's blockade of Gaza. There have been no reported Houthi attacks since then. The United States, Israel, and Britain have previously attacked Houthi-held areas in Yemen. The Israeli military declined to comment. "These continued attacks have cost the United States and world economies billions of dollars in damages, while also putting innocent lives at risk," Trump said.
